DSD64 ~120 MB WAV / AIFF ~35 MB FLAC ~22 MB ALAC ~22 MB MP3 320k ~8 MB AAC 256k ~6,5 MB Opus 128k ~3,3 MB Lossless Lossy DSD (nhóm riêng)

  • WAV / AIFF — không nén, nguyên bản, file to.

Audio file formats: lossy, lossless, DSD — the full breakdown

MP3, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AAC, Opus, DSD… a jungle of extensions. Here they are sorted into three simple groups, with a size distribution chart, a comparison table, and which ones Synq can read.

Synq
Plays FLAC/ALAC/WAV/AIFF + DSD bit-perfect, and MP3/AAC/Opus too — format-agnostic.
Music Check Music Check
A ".lossless" extension isn't proof — check the spectrum to see if the file matches its label.

Everyone who gets into digital music has stared at a messy folder of extensions with no idea which is which: the same song shows up as .mp3, .flac, .m4a, even .ape or .dsf. Good news — you don't need to memorize them all. Understand three big groups and every format drops neatly into one.

The three big groups

The most important split is whether compression throws data away.

Lossless · uncompressed

Original, large files

WAV · AIFF Every sample stored raw, no compression. Perfectly intact but the biggest files. WAV is weak on metadata; AIFF (Apple's) tags better.
Lossless · compressed

Original, lighter

FLAC · ALAC · APE · WavPack Compressed without losing a single bit — decodes back to the exact original. ~40–50% smaller than WAV. FLAC is the most common; ALAC is Apple's version.
Lossy · data discarded

Small, throws data away

MP3 · AAC · Opus · OGG · WMA Discards audio the ear struggles to hear so the file shrinks several times over. The removed part can't be restored. Great for streaming and small devices.
Its own group · 1-bit

DSD (SACD)

.dsf · .dff A recording method entirely unlike PCM, used for SACD. Lossless in its own sense, very large files, needs a compatible DAC. See the DSD article to go deep.

Size distribution chart

Approximate sizes for a ~3.5-minute track. Teal is lossless, amber is lossy — you can see at a glance what staying intact costs.

DSD64 ~120 MB WAV / AIFF ~35 MB FLAC ~22 MB ALAC ~22 MB MP3 320k ~8 MB AAC 256k ~6.5 MB Opus 128k ~3.3 MB Lossless Lossy DSD (its own group)

The common formats, one by one

Lossless

  • FLAC — the most common lossless codec, open-source, plays almost everywhere. The default choice for archiving.
  • ALAC — Apple's lossless, on par with FLAC in quality, fits the Apple ecosystem.
  • WAV / AIFF — uncompressed, original, big files. WAV is poor at metadata; AIFF tags better.
  • APE (Monkey's Audio) / WavPack (.wv) — heavily-compressing lossless but uncommon; many players support them only partially.

Lossy

  • MP3 — the oldest, universally compatible. At 320kbps it's good enough for most listeners.
  • AAC (usually in .m4a) — more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate; the iTunes/YouTube standard.
  • Opus — a modern codec, high quality at very low bitrates; common on the web and in calls.
  • OGG Vorbis — open-source, Opus's predecessor, still seen in games and some services.
  • WMA — Microsoft's, increasingly rare outside older Windows setups.

Which formats Synq supports

Synq is deliberately format-agnostic — whatever's in your library, you can play it:

  • Lossless: FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF and DSD. Over a DAC, Synq plays bit-perfect at the native sample rate; DSD goes via DoP or converts to PCM depending on the DAC.
  • Lossy: MP3, AAC/M4A, OGG Vorbis, Opus, WMA — for the everyday part of your library.
  • Handled cleanly behind the scenes: a few formats need a prep step to play smoothly per platform (e.g. ALAC on Android); Synq does that automatically without ever touching your original file.
  • Very niche: Monkey's Audio (.ape) and WavPack (.wv) are lossless but uncommon and only partially supported — if they matter to you, consider converting to FLAC.
Remember this: the extension is just the wrapper. A file labeled .flac can still be an MP3 in disguise. To be sure the insides match the label, check it with a spectrum.

Bottom line

For archiving

Use FLAC (or ALAC on Apple)

Keeps the original intact, smaller than WAV, plays everywhere. The best balance of quality and size.

For convenience

Lossy when you need small

AAC or Opus at a high bitrate is very space-efficient and good enough on the go. Just don't mistake it for lossless.

Bottom line: the whole jungle of extensions really comes down to three questions — is it compressed, does that compression lose data, and can your device read it. Understand the three groups and you can organize your own library. Read FLAC vs WAV vs ALAC vs AIFF to pick a storage format, and is FLAC really lossless so you're not fooled by a label.
